Our Independent Safeguarding Board

The Independent Safeguarding Board has responsibilities to observe and provide oversight of care and safeguarding matters and is accountable to the Board of Tristone Healthcare Ltd.
 
The role of the Safeguarding Board is to:
 
  • Advise portfolio businesses on the most appropriate policy and operational framework for safeguarding within Ofsted And CQC regulated services and advise on best practice in non-regulated services;
  • Provide strategic oversight for all aspects of safeguarding work across the organisation and ensure our policies and procedures are up to date and effective in protecting people who use services from potential or actual harm;
  • Identify, respond and escalate, as appropriate, organisational risk within community businesses related to safeguarding;
  • To monitor and evaluate performance, including scrutiny of performance data, understanding what is driving performance levels and making recommendations to improve performance;
  • To consider in detail individual issues where safeguarding standards have been compromised, or had the potential to be compromised, and act as an independent reviewer to assist our businesses in learning from incidents;
  • To ensure that our businesses respond appropriately to changes in relevant legislation;
  • To ensure that constructive links have been maintained with relevant stakeholders and external agencies, including Ofsted, CQC, DoE, DoH, ADASS, ADCS, NHS England and academic institutions.

The members of our independent board are:

David Johnstone

CHAIR

David Johnson is the Chair of the Independent Safeguarding Board. He has worked in Children’s service for over 35 years and has worked in a range of roles to improve the outcomes for vulnerable children. He has also worked in children’s residential services and later moved into managing fostering, adoption and safeguarding services for a number of different authorities, including a period as an Inspector. All of this experience will allow him to support the service of the Board in providing the best services to children and adults we can. On the Safeguarding Board David said  “it is an exciting new initiative to support practitioners and managers to deliver safe and outcome-focused care to those we work with”.

Jane Foster

BOARD MEMBER

Jane is an independent safeguarding consultant whose specialism is promoting and advising on safe organisational culture and safe working practice.

Prior to setting up her own company, Jane was the Tri-Borough (Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, and City of Westminster) Safe Organisations Manager and former Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) for almost eight years. She was also co-coordinator of the Pan-London LADO network. During this time she played a key role in keeping many of London’s children safe and is a well-known figure to many private, public and third sector organisations working with children.

Jane has considerable experience in delivering training to professionals working with children, having designed and delivered safeguarding training for Local Safeguarding Children Boards in both England and Wales as well as for private clients and the international schools’ sector. Jane is an accredited Safer Recruitment trainer and a member of the International Taskforce on Child Protection

Whilst Jane’s experience is predominantly in safeguarding children, she has also worked with local authority adults’ services and for a number of years held a voluntary position in Community Health

Aarti Bedi

BOARD MEMBER

Aarti is a highly experienced employment lawyer having worked at a large national firm, and now part of the boutique employment law team at Halborns – recognised by The Times as one of the best nationally. Aarti’s vast experience of supporting clients across social and specialist care sectors, as well as the entire Tristone community, means she’s expertly placed to provide robust employment law insight and solutions in the context of regulatory and compliance considerations. She’s known for providing her employment law expertise in a user-friendly and approachable manner, while balancing risk and commercial needs. Outside of work, she loves nothing more than spending time with her family, cooking up a storm and sharing her culinary knowledge!

Iqbal Singh

BOARD MEMBER

Iqbal is a former senior police officer with over 30 years of experience in public safety and law enforcement. He has extensive knowledge in strategic leadership and management, operational policing and investigation, and public safety and safeguarding.

Iqbal has four years of board-level experience in a Director’s role in which he oversaw the development and delivery of police training to national and international police forces. He is adept in customer service delivery, working in collaboration with partners across geographical as well as portfolio boundaries to achieve greater effectiveness and efficiency.

Iqbal has previous policing experience in the child protection arena and now sits as a panel member for Sport Resolutions which supports Non-Government Bodies in the professional management of safeguarding complaints and concerns. He is also an Independent Visitor for the National Youth Advocacy Service.

Dr. Lynne Wigens OBE

BOARD MEMBER

Lynne holds is Vice-Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Non-Executive Director of AHP Suffolk and a Trustee of Versus Arthritis. She is Visiting Professor of Nursing at the University of Suffolk and holds an Honorary Professorship in Health Studies at the University of East Anglia. Lynne’s career of over 40 years within healthcare has included clinical working within medicine, surgery and intensive care setting, healthcare professional education, and senior management roles.

Simon Rose

BOARD MEMBER

Simon is the National Executive Director of Education for the primary arm of a large, high-performing UK multi-academy trust. He has spent over twenty years working in the state education sector, with significant experience and impact at director and headteacher level. Simon holds an MA with distinction in educational leadership and management from the University of Nottingham. He also sits on two national education trust boards as a non-executive director.
On his appointment to our Safeguarding Board Simon stated: “There is nothing more important than the safeguarding of children and young people, so I am delighted to join Tristone’s independent safeguarding board.”

Jan Pickles OBE

BOARD MEMBER

Jan is a Registered Social Worker starting her career in residential social work and then having worked in most statutory agencies and a range of charities over her career. Currently she undertakes reviews into current and historic safeguarding concerns in all sport, faith, care and education sectors. Jan provides supervision for safeguarding leaders, supporting them in their ongoing work to develop and sustain a robust safeguarding culture in their organisations. Jan chairs reviews into adult and child death and serious harm for Local Authorities across the UK and the Home Office. Jan is a member of a range of national Advisory Boards such the Child Sexual Abuse centre and the Contextual Safeguarding Board. Jan led the groundbreaking work on the introduction of a risk led approach to the management of survivors and victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence, introducing MARACs and IDVAs across the UK and was awarded an OBE in 2004 for this work.
